Concussion Education Must Extend Beyond Schools-Must Include Summer Camps As Well

A recent letter to the editor in the Boston Globe, Summer camps must also be vigilant in safeguarding kids about  raises a very important point, concussions happen in many locales and concussion education needs to be extended beyond schools to summer camps as well.

While at camp, children are exposed to the dangers of concussion on a daily basis. For example in baseball there is risk the risk of being struck by a ball in the head, being struck by a bat or merely children running into each other.  Similar risks of head injury take place in all summer sporting activities.

Camp personnel need to be educated about the dangers associated with concussion, how to recognize a concussion, the need to seek prompt medical attention, the need to notify a parent that a concussion has taken place and the need to keep the child out of active sport participation until all of the symptoms of a concussion have resolved.

Perhaps, individual states should consider legislation mandating concussive safety training for camp personnel.
