Protein Found To Protect and Repair Damaged Brain Cells
Some exciting news out of Australia where researchers have found a protein that can save neurons from dying following a traumatic brain injury.
The naturally occurring protein, code named BP5 is produced following a brain trauma and can prevent further brain cells from dying after a brain injury.
In cases of traumatic brain injury such as car crashes or falls, if the protein is injected early enough, the researchers discovered that they were able to stop further damage to brain cells.
The research at this point is only preliminary and studies have only taken place in mice. Next, researchers will study the brains of people who died from head trauma to see whether they have higher quantities of the special protein.
The full study is published in the Journal of Neuroscience. You can obtain more information by going to the story published in Science Daily.
