National Academy of Sciences: Report on Traumatic Brain Injury Services

Tbi_model_systems_report The National Academy of Sciences has just issued a comprehensive report evaluating the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)Traumatic Brain Injury Program.  The program funded through the federal government is designed to provide incentives to individual States to develop means of improving services to victims of traumatic brain damage and their families.  The program was initially funded in 1996 and reauthorized in the year 2000.  In 2004 the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) recommend an independent evaluation of the effectiveness of this program.

This independent study has not only found the program effective but has called it influential in expanding services for victims of traumatic brain injury.

However, the first finding of this report is quite distressing to those involved in the delivery of services to persons with TBI and their families.  The report found that  "the quality and coordination of post acute TBI service systems remains inadequate, although progress has been made in some states."

As a member of the New York State Traumatic Brain Injury Services Council, I am extremely concerned about the inability of New York residents to access needed services following a traumatic brain injury.   Hopefully this report will serve as a good report card on efforts to improve services and motivate the many different players in the delivery of services to better work together to improve the quality of life for victims of traumatic brain injury.

If you have any comments or suggestions for better service coordination, I welcome you forwarding your comments directly to me.
