Head Injury and Motorcycle Helmets

Motorcycle_helmet_report_1 Any one who doesn't believe that motorcycle helmets prevent head injury and death, should read the report,"Evaluation of the Repeal of the All-Rider Motorcycle Helmet Law in Florida", prepared by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (nhtsa).

The report finds that following Florida's repeal of the mandatory helmet law for all persons over the age of 21:

  • Motorcyclist fatalities increased by 81%;
  • Non Fatal Serious Injury increased by 32% in the first year;
  • There was a 40% increase in motorcyclist hospital admissions;
  • HOSPITAL ADMISSION FOR HEAD INJURY INCREASED BY 82%!;
  • THE AVERAGE HEAD INJURY TREATMENT COST INCREASED FOUR FOLD!

Also of significance was the finding that helmet use declined markedly among riders under age 21 who were still covered by the law.
